Description
This article describes a wide range of factors
that influence the current and future state of the health
of Nigerians. A holistic interpretation of the term health
is used throughout this paper. Although Nigeria has a history
of effective and innovative public health practice, this has
been gradually eroded in the past two decades. The current
state of the nation requires a return to the basics and public
health practice targeting the wider determinants of health.
The good news is the existence of a credible public health
training programme and a return to democratic governance.
However, years of neglect means that Africas most populous
nation would require some help in rebuilding its public health
infrastructures.
