Description

This paper argues for an integrated approach to
examining and dealing with the complex issue of the
Nursing Curriculum in Mauritius, which has become
outdated. There is an urgency to develop a new curriculum
which reflects current international standards of practice in
nursing whilst taking account of the local heath care needs.
Patients have become more aware of their rights and expect
high standards of care. A University commissioned
curriculum will deliver a high quality programme within a
multidisciplinary team and prepare the nurses to meet the
needs and expectations of our local population. We are
proposing a nursing programme of 3 years that is university
based with clinically based placements. This would lead to a
diploma in nursing, with options to specialize in various
disciplines afterwards or undertake further training to become
a graduate.
