Spontaneous hypoglycaemia

Description

Hypoglycaemia is a biochemical sign of many different
diseases and is not a diagnosis in its own right: merely a
pointer to one. It owes its importance to the fact that it
produces symptoms referrable to the nervous system which are
often the reason for the patient seeking medical help. Apart
from emergency treatment which is always to raise the blood
glucose concentration to the upper range of normoglycaemia
and maintain it there until the patient recovers the correct
treatment of hypoglycaemia is that of the primary disease
causing it. Appropriate use of laboratory and radiological
procedures makes this possible in almost every case. The protocol
of investigation used in the authors laboratory is described.
