Description
In response to the need for more doctors, the Government through the Higher Education Funding Council and the Department of Health announced an increase in medical students of 57% (from 3,749 to 5,894)1 between 1998 and 2005. This huge expansion is being achieved by increasing student places at existing medical schools, creating
four year training programmes for science graduates; twinning arrangements where an existing curriculum is hosted in a new site (eg the Leicester-Warwick collaboration); and the establishment of four entirely new medical schools. Brighton and Sussex (BSMS) is one of these new schools, with our first intake in 2003.
