Description
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is one of the major neurodegenerative diseases. It relates to progressive muscular paralysis due to degeneration of motor neurones in the brain, brainstem, and spinal cord. Both upper and lower motor neurones can be affected leading to findings of hyperreflexia, spasticity, or weakness with insidious onset. MND is progressive and usually leads to death due to respiratory failure over a course of 2 – 5 years. There are no specific guidelines for managing MND in older people. We focus on the importance of a multidisciplinary holistic approach in treatment, centring on patient autonomy and carer involvement.
