A case of herapin induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) with thrombosis

Description

Heparin is a widely prescribed drug for both treatment and prophylaxis of thromoembolic diseases. Clinicians are aware of the haemorrhagic complications; however, heparin can paradoxically cause thrombosis. We present a patient with heparin induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) in which the thrombotic events were mild and not life threatening. Vigilance for this complication is essential and hence regular platelet counts are needed in patients on heparin to detect HIT and prevent catastrophic thrombotic events.
