Description
Several strategies, reviewed below, for modifying clinicians use of the laboratory have been proposed but none have been universally successful. Although there may be several reasons for this, the main limiting factors of these strategies are their labour intensiveness and failure to provide timely and accurate information. It is also clear that a combination of strategies is more likely than any single approach to be successful in improving clinicians laboratory usage. We propose that expert systems at the clinical-laboratory interface utilising a multifactorial approach within a framework of commitment from clinicians and laboratorians offer the best prospect for modifying clinicians requesting patterns.
