When it proves necessary to provide a patient with an alternative airway or access to the airway via an alternative route, the indications for so doing should be carefully considered. All methods carry a significant morbidity and will affect both the patients self perception and the nursing/medical management of this condition. However, it is the Otolaryngologists responsibility to appreciate when intervention is necessary and to effect this without delay.
