Description
Controlled trials are not possible, but the study of fatal anaphylactic reactions can expose poor management strategy. There are new guidelines for treatment of reactions; overdose with epinephrine must be avoided and postural management of shock may be lifesaving. Appropriate management of acute allergic reactions depends on accurate diagnosis, but this is sometimes difficult. Since rescue from a reaction may not be possible, allergen avoidance is crucial. Optimal management depends on the cause: fatalities due to food allergy have most commonly been asthma attacks in patients with poorly managed asthma, so optimal control of the asthma is the priority.
