Liquid based cytology (LBC) is currently being marketed as an alternative methodology to replace the conventional PAP smear in cervical cytology.Various claims have been made in support of LBC, but these have recently been questioned by industry independent reviews. Although LBC might offer some advantages over conventional PAP smears, stated claims have not always been critically evaluated. In our view, currently available evidence would not support the nationwide implementation of LBC at present. Further industry independent studies are recommended in order to evaluate the place of this technology within the NHSCSP.
