Soft tissue lesions are rare but are amongst the most challenging for the histopathologist. It can even be difficult to determine whether a given biopsy is benign or malignant. This article offers basic guidelines for the diagnostic approach to soft tissue lesions, thereby minimising serious misinterpretation. The contribution of immunohistochemistry and cytogenetics is also briefly discussed.
