Diagnosis of breast cancer without resorting to surgical excision is now regarded as an essential aim. Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology, despite being a useful technique has not been applied with such success in this respect in the UK. Largely because of this and with the advent of new techniques, core biopsy is assuming a much greater role. In this article I will discuss the basics of core biopsy interpretation and examine some of the problems and potential pitfalls.
