Description
Giant cell arteritis and non-Takyasus (large vessel vasculitis) comprise a spectrum of rheumatological conditions that predominantly affect an older population. These conditions present in a variety of ways ranging from the characteristic temporal headache and jaw claudication of giant cell arteritis to more subtle, non-specific features such as malaise, fever, mylagia and weight loss. The wide range of presentations, coupled with limited awareness of LVV can present diagnostic and management difficulties. We look at two cases that highlight these difficulties and discuss the recent developments in diagnosis, investigation, management and treatment in the literature. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of giant cell arteritis and large vessel vasculitis tailored towards the geriatrician.
