Description

This article outlines the various methods of uterine
imaging. It rev i ews the sonographic, MRI(magnet i c
resonance imaging) and HSG (hyste ro s a l p i n g o gra m )
appearances of the normal and abnormal uterus including
the influence on the endometrium of the normal premenopausal
hormonal changes and those of HRT(hormone
replacement therapy) and of Tamoxifen Specific imaging
features of fibroids, adenomyosis, congenital anomalies and
cervical cancer are not included. Emphasis is placed on the
value of the TVUS (Transvaginal Ultrasound) In PMB
( p o stmenopausal bleeding) and in the detection of
endometrial cancer. The important US features of the
developing early pregnancy are summarised along with the
joint RCOG and RCR guidelines relating to their safe
interpretation. Discussion is included on further guidelines
aimed at the safe conduct of US examinations and on
possible future imaging pathways and techniques.
