Description

Haemoptysis is one of the most important symptoms of
cardio-pulmonary disease – even small amounts of blood
can indicate significant underlying pathology and untreated
massive haemoptysis is associated with high mortality rate.
Imaging plays a pivotal role in patients with haemoptysis.
The chest radiograph aids the initial assessment and multidetector
computed tomography provides a powerful diagnostic
tool for assessment of the airways, lung parenchyma and
thoracic vessels. Bronchial artery embolisation is now
considered the therapeutic method of choice in the management
of massive haemoptysis.
