Hormone replacement therapy and cardiovascular disease

Description

Oestrogens have beneficial effects on lipids,
vascular reactivity and insulin sensitivity in
postmenopausal women. No conclusive effect on blood
pressure has so far been demonstrated, but oestrogens
increase the risks of thrombosis. Epidemiological data
would suggest a protective action against
cardiovascular disease. However, the first large
randomised controlled trial of hormone replacement
therapy in postmenopausal women with
cardiovascular disease (HERS, Heart and
Estrogen/progestin Replacement Study) has shown no
overall benefit at the end of over four years follow-up,
with an increased risk of death in the first year
countered by decreased risk in years four and five.
