Description

Abstract

Fumaric acid ester (FAE) therapy has been used in the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris for several decades. It is licensed in Germany and the Netherlands and its license for other countries is pending. Several studies have shown the beneficial effects of FAE. The main adverse effects seen are gastrointestinal. The mode of action, which is not entirely understood, is thought to be mainly due to inhibition of T cell activity with a shift from a Th1 type of response to a Th2 type pattern as well as the inhibition of dendritic cell differentiation.
