There are as many books on H pylori as there are different eradication regimens and choosing the right book is no less confusing! If however you are looking for a concise, state-of-the-art
summary of H pylori pathogenesis, then read no further.

The contents of this book are based on a meeting in Galway, Ireland in March 1997 where national and international experts discussed the latest developments in
pathogenesis and host response in H pylori infection. The book is divided into three
sections: bacterial-induced mechanisms in pathogenesis, host-induced response and clinical relevance of infection.

The text is informative and mostly easy-to-read (the molecular and cellular biology chapters were especially heavy going). The chapter H pylori heat shock protein:
molecular biology and potential pathogenic role left me intellectually-challenged after the first paragraph; to progress further would have required a sabbatical in
molecular biology. There is however much to commend with clear and high-quality photographs and diagrams.

The strength of this book is in its
coverage of the basic science issues relating to H pylori pathogenesis, but this exposes its weakness: only four of 23 chapters relate to clinical practice.

This book can be thoroughly
recommend to clinicians and scientists
looking for a summary of current
knowledge on molecular and cellular aspects of H pylori infection, but those in search
of more clinically orientated information are advised to look elsewhere.
