Description
Bone marrow imaging is an integral part of almost all
CT and MR examinations and should be routinely evaluated,
though the appearances need interpretation in the light of
the clinical situation. The varying appearances of normal
marrow and trabecular bone with age, sex, lifestyle and imaging
modality should be understood and appreciated in every scan.
Finally, the superimposed effects of pathology can be identified.
Common pathologies include marrow oedema from trauma, infection,
osteonecrosis and infiltration by metastatic bone disease.
This article describes several typical appearances within
these categories and also identifies some of the pitfalls
in interpretation of marrow pathology.
