Are all follow-up appointments appropriate? A Pilot Study

Author(s): B West, V Bolarum & J P Birchall

Description

In response to the question of the appropriateness of

all follow-up appointments in the ENT outpatient department

at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, a pilot study was undertaken.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether guidelines

could be introduced which would result in a reduction in the

number of follow-up appointments. Case notes from a representative

sample of clinics were analysed. The appropriateness of follow-ups

was independently assessed by a Consultant member of staff.

In the sample analysed 3.6% of follow-ups were deemed to be

inappropriate. This was considered to be acceptable. These

findings did not warrant the setting up of a large scale study.
