Description
Liver disease in pregnancy is uncommon; however jaundice,
which is often a sign of significant liver disease, is reported
in approximately 1:1500 to 1:5000 pregnancies. Liver
tests abnormalities are seen in 3% of women who carry
pregnancy to term. Though rare, certain forms of liver
disease such as obstetric cholestasis, acute fatty liver and
hepatic rupture/infarction carry a high mortality for both
the mother and the foetus. Early recognition of the condition
and prompt delivery is the key to optimal management of
these patients.
