Description
Local authorities have a statutory obligation to inspect both private and Council run residential homes. Inspection of nursing homes is the responsibility of the health authority. Ultimately, inspectors have powers to close failing homes. The inspection documents relating to residential homes, but not those concerning nursing homes, are in the public domain and can be found in local libraries. Inspection Units are independent of the Social Services Department in order to encourage objective assessment of local authority residential homes.
