Quantitative analysis of the Bidirecional
Fetomaternal Transfer of Nucleated
Cells and plasma DNA.

Clinical Chmistry 2000:46:1301-9.

Recent work has established that a two-way
transfer of nucleated cells takes place between
mother and foetus and is increasingly recognised to
have biological and clinical implications. The
presence of foetal cells in maternal blood is
associated with e.g. pre-eclampsia and autoimmune
diseases and the reverse situation has raised the
question if immuno-competent cells in umbilical
cord blood constitutes a risk of graft-vs-host disease
in cases where umbilical cord blood is used for bone
marrow transplantation.
