Description
This review discusses the formulation and administration of vaccines for Type I allergic conditions from a wide perspective of time. Vaccine designs for allergenspecific immunotherapy (SIT) are criticised and some answers are provided. The importance of standardisation is described. Future design features are seen to be particularly directed by current mechanistic theory regarding the importance of inducing T helper (h) 1 cell immune responses. Recombinant allergen vaccine possibilities are discussed. The novel concept of passive immunisation by humanised anti-IgE antibody is outlined. Vaccines by mouth are postulated to increase in use via relatively simple advances in the formulation of sublingual vaccines.
