Description
Thyroid disease is common in older people and increases with age. Increased thyroid screening leads to the detection of subclinical or borderline results, for which the clinical implications and management strategy remain unclear; this is further complicated by the effects of aging and nonthyroidal illness on thyroid hormone metabolism. This article seeks to resolve some of these issues by reviewing the relevant literature. As well as this, some of the complexity surrounding thyroid nodule detection and evaluation is discussed, including the use of diagnostic ultrasound scans. Finally, treatment guidelines are suggested based on current national guidelines and advice.
