Description

With wider usage of imaging in the last decade has arisen the diagnostic challenge of the small, usually incidentally detected tumours. Renal tumours are a typical example: up to 40% are now incidental finds and recent series of renal cell carcinomas (RCC) report a smaller size and stage at discovery with improved 5 year survival rate. Management has also evolved: surgery still offers the only chance of cure and with this trend towards smaller tumours identified in younger patients, many more nephron sparing, partial nephrectomies are performed. Accurate diagnosis is therefore crucial.
