Abstract
Recently, there has been a substantial increase in the
detection of small and incidental renal tumours. Given the
favorable prognosis of such tumours, a number of minimally
invasive nephron-sparing techniques such as
radiofrequency ablation have emerged into the field of
treatment. The latter has dramatically changed the
treatment of small renal tumours. It is a viable option for
patients in whom the tumour is unresectable, who refuse or
are unfit for surgery and in whom preservation of renal
parenchyma is desired. Though the intermediate term safety
and efficacy of radiofrequency ablation for a renal tumour is
proven in carefully selected patients the long-term benefit is
not yet known. Prospective long-term studies could clarify its
role in the therapy of renal cancers.
