Description
There is a wide agreement on the need to develop public
health leadership, but much less certainty on how to achieve
this. Little evidence exists on how best to develop public health
leadership. In the UK, English primary care trust directors of
public health face a unique leadership challenge in balancing
public health priorities with wider NHS roles and
responsibilities. To be effective directors of public health need to
act as advocates and educators, winning wider stakeholder
ownership of the public health agenda. Developing public
health leadership requires collaborative inquiry, innovation,
testing out and sharing learning.
