All health organisations have a responsibility to improve the quality of health care. Clear accountabilities for assuring clinical quality as well as the financial position are now identified within these organisations and enshrined in a legislative framework. Clinical governance is a mechanism whereby standards set and identified at national and local levels will be delivered and monitored locally. This paper outlines the framework for Bromley Health public health practitioners to apply clinical governance principles to the practice of public health. It should be seen as a developmental process and will enable strengths and weaknesses within the department to be identified.
