Description
The thymus is functional into old age, but the numbers of lymphocyte emigrants falls dramatically when compared to young adults. This has implications for bone marrow transplantation in adults after the peripheral T cell pool has been depleted by conditioning regimes. T-cell receptor excision circles (TRECs) in the blood are a useful measure of thymic function and have facilitated research into strategies for restoring function in the elderly.
