Description
Post-operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a serious postoperative complication, occurring with a higher frequency in the older population. POCD is seen after both cardiac and non-cardiac surgery. The aetiology and pathophysiology of POCD have not been conclusively established to date. When it occurs POCD is associated with poor outcome. This review highlights the multifactorial background of this condition and the difficulties in diagnosis and discusses the developing role of intra-operative neurologic monitoring in its prevention.
