The trainee geriatricians workplace is packed with learning opportunities. The challenge is how to exploit them. Medical schools structure learning for students but the workplace can be crueller. This means the learner must take, and make, opportunities to learn building the foundations for lifelong learning applicable in many different, and potentially less friendly, environments.1 Discussed here are some general principles as well as specific applications in geriatrics. The learning environment needs organisation and leadership but the focus of this article is that which the learner controls.
