Unlike clinical specialties where the transition from a specialist registrar to a consultant post is smooth with relatively little change in the job content the transition in public health medicine is a life event. Removed from the rather protected training environment the new responsibilities can be daunting. Having to juggle with a range of issues simultaneously, keeping to demanding timetables and having to take responsibility for the work pose challenges.
