Description
Epidemiological studies show that high intake of oily
fish is associated with reduced incidence of
cardiovascular disease. This has been attributed to
the consumption of n-3(omega-3) long chain poly
unsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA). Furthermore
ingestion of LC-PUFA is associated with reduced
arterial stiffness, which is an indirect index of
cardiovascular risk. Mechanism by which LC-PUFA
affects cardiovascular risk is not clear. One possible
mechanism is via the production of nitric oxide
which is an important regulator of endothelial
function. Production of nitric oxide invivo can be
assessed by f low mediated dilation (FMD) of brachial
artery. Previous studies have shown an association
between red cell DHA (an index of LC-PUFA
intake) and cardiovascular disease. There have been
no studies examining the effect of low dose LCPUFA
in amounts equivalent to that in normal diet
on FMD.
