A number of clinical techniques are available to obtain pulmonary tissue for histological diagnosis. In this review article, the procedural indications and limitations are discussed together with a guideline approach to specimen handling and reporting. Diagnostic pitfalls associated with small biopsies are also briefly addressed. The handling of large resections and autopsy specimens is discussed in other texts1,2.
