Description
The incidence of endophthalmitis following cataract surgery varies with different types of intraocular lens implants (IOL). This is partly related to chemical and physical properties of different IOL implants which influence the adherence of microorganisms to their surfaces. In addition, the nature of IOL material governs the size of incision used and method of implantation, hence contact between IOL and patient’s conjunctive. Minimising the IOL-related risk of endophthalmitis might include re-evaluating the IOL material, reducing its surface irregularities and inserting it through a small incision using an injector device to reduce risk of contamination.
