Description

There have been major advances in the understanding of acquired immuno deficiency syndrome (AIDS), initially observed in gay men in the 1980s. The severe degree of immunosuppression observed in these patients predisposed them to the development of opportunistic infections. In the pre-terminal stages many of these patients developed CMV retinitis with resulting blindness. The management of these patients has improved with the introduction of newer antiretroviral drugs and in particular protease inhibitors.
