Infectious endophthalmitis is a devastating complication of cataract surgery resulting in significant loss of visual function in many cases. Early diagnosis together with appropriate therapy is therefore essential in order to optimise visual outcome.
This article reviews the incidence, aetiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, microbiology, management, outcome and prevention of bacterial endophthalmtis following cataract surgery. Special emphasis is placed on how to perform a vitreous biopsy and inject intravitreal antibiotics.
