Description

The mainstay of treatment for genuine stress incontinence is surgery. When elevation of the bladder neck fails to restore continence, it is assumed that decreased urethral resistance is the cause of the incontinence. Bladder neck injection is a simple technique with minimal complications and provides an alternative to more complex surgery such as artificial sphincter insertion. Observed cure rates decline with time. 70% subjective success and 50% objective cure are reported at 2 years. More recently injections have been proven to be of equal efficacy as a primary intervention for stress incontinence and cost benefit analyses with possible cost benefits.
