Description

Acute pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), the clinical syndrome that accompanies ascending infection of the female upper genital tract, is a major cause of morbidity in sexually active women. As such it represents a serious public health problem. Increasing numbers of women are affected by the disease and present for diagnosis and treatment to a wide variety of clinical specialities. Unfortunately, despite the enormous negative impact of PID on female reproductive health, identification of the most effective strategy for establishing an accurate diagnosis, a critical step if we are to limit the burden of PID, remains extremely difficult.
