Hyponatraemia and Cerebral salt wasting

Description

Cerebral salt wasting syndrome is a condition where there is renal loss of sodium usually associated
with intracranial disorders causing ECF volume depletion and hyponatraemia. Although there have
been some doubts about the existence of this condition it is now accepted as a separate entity. This
is often confused with syndrome of inappropriate ADH secretion (SIADH) and sometimes it can be
difficult to differentiate between them. The pathogenesis is not fully understood but likely to be due to
more than one factor. The possible mechanisms are discussed in this article.
