Functional brain imaging in acute stroke

Author(s): S Ragab

Description

Recent advances in functional neuroimaging have enabled the study of the brain during evolving ischaemia and resulted in an improved understanding of the pathology of cerebrovascular disease. Functional imaging allows early and accurate detection of ischaemic and infarcted tissue and can reveal hypoperfused but potentially viable tissue in the ischaemic penumbra. This has coincided with the advent of acute treatment for ischaemic stroke. The aim of this review is to provide an overview on the various techniques used in functional imaging of stroke and to outline their potential role in clinical practice.
