Description
The function of the colon, rectum and sphincter mechanisms which maintain continence are discussed, with illustrations. The causes of, and symptoms associated with, bowel dysfunction and incontinence in the elderly are defined, and the significant health problems likely to be encountered and which may affect bowel function are identified. The main investigative techniques for assessing ano-rectal function with their normal values are described. The range of conservative managements of, as well as the more invasive methods of dealing with, faecal incontinence and bowel problems are outlined. The concurrent support and advice from other disciplines necessary in these patients, such as physiotherapy and dietetics, are emphasised and the essentials of running a bowel dysfunction clinic are explained. The surgical procedures which may be helpful when conservative measures fail are summarised and their drawbacks alluded to.
