Description
Requests for testosterone measurement from general practitioners and hospital clinicians is common. With the availability of automated analysers many laboratories are now offering a direct (without extraction) testosterone assay. However, there are significant analytical problems with this method. Furthermore, interpretation of serum results requires knowledge of physiological factors such as circadian rhythm and pre-analytical factors such as the effect of delay in separating plasma. These analytical and pre analytical factors are discussed in this article.
