It is a pleasure to introduce the first issue of this new journal. The CME Breast Journal is designed to assist clinicians in self-directed learning. The articles are mainly aimed at established breast surgeons and Higher Surgical Trainees. The journal comes at an opportune time as few publications exist to provide a comprehensive format for the continuing professional development and education of breast specialists.

The emphasis on providing specialist breast care brings us into closer integration with radiologists, oncologists, pathologists and nurses. A journal for continuing professional development needs to be more directed towards all members of this multidisciplinary team, without the inevitable dilution of contents associated with a more general journal. We are grateful to have enlisted the help of an extremely talented editorial board to enable these aims to be met.

While publications focusing on research in breast disease continue to proliferate, there is limited literature that is readily available to the practising breast surgeon that allows the needs of continuing medical education to be met. We sincerely hope our readers will find this a worthwhile addition to the material available and a useful forum for discussion. The multiple choice questions complete the educational loop for assessment to become eligible for CME/CPD credits.

In each issue, a leading article aims to address a controversial issue of recent debate or significant recent advance.

The series of reviews will cover a comprehensive range of subjects of interest to practising surgeons and senior trainees. Description of surgical techniques in, “My Way”, we hope, will generate debate around the methods of doing a particular operation and handy tips for improvement of techniques.
