Author(s): Author 4

Description

Phosphate is an essential ion for many physiological functions in the body. Recent studies have shown that in addition to calcitrophic hormones other recently discovered factors called phosphatonins are important in phosphate homeostasis. Disorders of phosphate balance are common in hospital practice and often they go undetected. Hypophosphataemia, when severe can lead to significant clinical consequences. In this article the cause, clinical manifestations and treatment of hypo and hyperphosphataemia are described.
