Description

Recently carotid sinus syndrome (CSS) and neurocardiogenic syncope (NCS) [previously known as vasovagal syncope] have been increasingly recognised as important causes of syncope and falls in elderly people. Both these conditions produce syncope and / or falling due to cerebral hypoperfusion as a result of cardiac induced hypotension and /or bradycardia. In this review the physiology of the syndromes, the reasons for the recent renewed interest in the and the clinical implications for the current management of syncope are discussed.
