Description
We describe a 66 year old woman who presented with increasing confusion, profound weight loss and a skin lesion. We emphasise the need for awareness of the possibility of calciphylaxis as a cause of skin necrosis and septicaemia in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. We discuss the importance of making a rapid diagnosis of calciphylaxis as a possible cause of skin necrosis in patients with persistent hypercalcaemia. Aggressive treatment seems the only way to reduce the extremely high mortality of established calciphylaxis.
