Biochemical Markers for Carcinoid Disease

Author(s): K. R. Allen

Description

Carcinoid tumours produce a wide range of potential biomarkers of which chromogranin A (CgA), serotonin and its metabolite 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA) are the most extensively studied. The diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of these assays are reviewed together with other more novel markers including the tachykinins. The analytical characteri-stics and sample collection criteria associated with the measurement of these biomarkers are discussed and problems associated with their use in the long-term monitoring of treatment are considered.
