Description
Abstract
Transrectal prostatic biopsy is used commonly in the diagnosis of prostatic carcinoma. The incidence of infection, which is occasionally fatal, has been reported to occur in <1% to >50% of patients. It is therefore surprising that the role of antimicrobial prophylaxis remains confused despite the large numbers of procedures performed annually and the risk of resulting infection. We review the literature and conclude with our current practice at the Institute of Urology.
